Originally published before his contributions during the Civil War, this short (35,000 words) biography of John C. Fremont (1813–1890), also known as “the Rocky Mountain Explorer” and “the Pathfinder,” succinctly outlines the life and accomplishments of one of America’s giants of the pre-Civil War era.
Here was a man who seemed to be always ahead of his time, to see what was needed before anyone else, and who acted when other people were barely thinking about acting. His voyages of exploration were critical to knitting the country together into one entity spanning the continent from Atlantic to Pacific, and as the first nominee for president of the brand new Republican party he set the table for Abraham Lincoln’s ensuing successes.
