A nickel weekly originally published March 24, 1899, number 9 in the popular “Secret Service” series featuring “Old and Young King Brady, Detectives” which started January 27, 1899, and came out like clockwork every Friday for more than two decades—by which time well more than a thousand issues had been published—The Maniac Doctor; or, Old and Young King Brady in Peril has the Bradys being sent to upstate New York by the chief of the Secret Service to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a number of mechanics who work at local machine shops. They all seem to disappear while walking to or from work on the same street, yet in spite of such an obvious clue no previous detectives sent to investigate have discovered the cause.
The answer turns out to involve an insane doctor and a criminal with whom the Bradys have previous experience.
At more than 25,000 words, this novella-sized work of pulp fiction, besides being an interesting and fun read, gives the reader a taste of what the masses were reading in the late 19th and early 20th century time period.
