Dime novel, Civil War

Number 13 in “The War Library: Original Stories of Adventure in the War for the Union,” a series of dime novels that are set in the midst of actual Civil War battles.

True Blue; or, The Union Scout of Tennessee, originally published December 9, 1882, takes place in 1864 during the struggle for control of the border state of Tennessee—half Unionist and half Confederate in its initial sympathies—as Hood chases Schofield across the state to the edge of Nashville, and then Thomas reverses the momentum and chases Hood back out of the state.  This was called the Franklin-Nashville Campaign and Hood’s ultimate defeat was the beginning of the end for the Confederacy.

Nowhere was the sanguineous, consanguineous tragedy of the American Civil War more clearly played out than in border states like Tennessee.  At more than 47,000 words, this full-length novel, besides being an interesting and fun read, is a painless way to learn some Civil War history.
