Non-fiction, Age of Sail

Originally published in 1913, this is a condensed and at times personalized history of the exceptional and beautiful little town of Stonington, Connecticut, written by a member of the Palmer family, one of the pre-eminent and original families of the town.  The book begins in the 1630s with the history of Native Americans in the area.  The town’s settlement by Europeans begins in 1649.  The Palmers arrived in 1652.

For such a small municipality, Stonington has a number of remarkable achievements to its credit, including being the home town of arguably the greatest sailor who ever lived, Nathaniel Brown Palmer; and being the only town in America to fight off an attack by the British in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
